| Charisma
and Skill - two words which stand out when you meet and experience
the abilities of a rap genius, ever since Freestyle Master blessed
the UK Hip Hop scene with his raw talent on the debut 12"
single "But We're Different" with rap collective Power
Move the whole game has never been the same, flipped on it's
head is a good way of summing it up. Grabbing all of the limelight
from the debut release Freestyle Master was quickly signed to
one of the countries leading independent rap labels Underground
Street Tape. Foreseeing a bright future for him U.S.T released
one the most hyped and anticipated EP's of it's time "The
Next Level". Propelling both Freestyle Master and Steg.G
into new dimensions within the UK Hip Hop scene.
"I was 15 years old when we got
signed to do the Power Move single, shit was mad crazy one
minute we where all kicking rhymes on the street, dropping
little demo's and then the next thing Bam! We had this deal,
a single, then a tour, next thing Underground Street Tapes
which was a hot label for it's time invited me and Steg.G
down to their office. They laid out this project and plan
and offered us to front their roster, that's when "The
Next Level" was produced.
The
Hip Hop fans stood up and took notice, praise was heaped upon
this young rapper and it was without doubt that a follow up
to the U.S.T debut would not be far behind and when it came
there was to be no disappointment. Captivating rap hungry
fans with unique and innovative lyrics Freestyle Master dropped
the amazing "Mind Games" EP. The biggest selling
Scottish Hip Hop joint at it's time also enjoyed the success
of mass media attention, one track in particular was added
to play lists throughout the country "It's Fresh"
was the hailed as "an innovation in British rap." Tim Westwood became an admirer of the Freestyle Master after
picking up on Mind Games and has become a fan of his releases
since.
"Back in the day's John Peel and Tim Westwood broke everything
that was hot for the moment so for the two of them to be play
listing me on my second EP and describing tracks like "It's
Fresh" as (put this in your Top 10 tracks of the year)
everything was falling into the structure we were building
for our Hip Hop career."
All
hail the "The Journey" LP described by Hip Hop Connections
magazine as "an album which will go down in the annals
of UK Hip Hop history". Even Lenny Kravitz expressed
interest after hearing the album he attempted to sign Freestyle
Master and Steg.G to a new label he was creating in the UK.
Deciding that the time was right to create a fresh new label
Steg.G created "Powercut Productions" the label
which they felt had everything to offer. Freestyle Master
placed his future in the hands of the indie master of quality
Hip Hop.
"Everybody wanted something out of Hip
Hop in the UK back then and rather than letting someone who
just wanted to tap into something which was the hot minute,
we knew this was our life and decided to get our own label
up off the ground and that's when Powercut was born"
Collaborations with some breaking names in
the UK, Freestyle Master developed a taste for quality finished
product and that is what came next in the EP "Universal"
with the big hitting track "The Realm" featuring
Gamma, this created new avenues and gained new fans who where
being swayed by the enormity of the whole new sound coming
from the Powercut label. No more disappointment as the label
released their collective artists album "Clyde Built"
LP with the Freestyle Master dropping one of the hottest joints
of the year "Trouble Maker."
"Right now I've got my album "Natural
Selections" just about to hit the street. The whole track
list from start to finish is without doubt my Master Piece,
this is what I've been working hard on for the past year and
it's what I've been working towards since I started in Hip
Hop."
Explosive
- sums up the new Freestyle Master LP. Probably the most significant
rap album in UK Hip Hop as nowadays it is hard to find a flawless
musical journey in British Rap but this album not only does
just that it should buy a return ticket because there needs
to be a follow-up.
